Part time hay slasher and pig farmer Yorta Ztu reports:

I from Bulgaria just holiday one week to see cousin from uncle side (the one who run farm of spot pig in homeland) – Tyrone. He good man and respect big in home country cause has moustache (although extra bit on chin not so fashion hot). He tell me late I play cricket for team. He call me ringer. In Bulgaria this mean licky of poop part but he tell me no same here. I play not for time since 1987 after wood strike finished in Belarus and timber now can be used for to makest hit bat. I nervous.

Some men toss – I look away. New boy gets hits first and we to bowls balls. Some Englishes mens first bowls. Stefan look quick and I shitty to think to hits this speedy ball. 2 overs and new boys is hitting 16 runners. Also first is Dave – he makes 2 men go off field and Tyrone's friends to cheer him and slap bot. Also cousin is sending backs one of new boy and man in the lead of team, Will also does same. Much touching of hands and shoulders and some sneaky to bot. I is forced to throw some and cousin taked catch and new boy go back to. I having to turn much to stop mens touchy on bots.

New boy Rafu getted 51 runners and he leave for bit. Some others 27 and 28 runners. 1 new boy score no runners and he looked like prize winning pig been fall down sick sick.

Some Tyrone friends saying it dark and hard to see balls. I shitty some more cause balls hard and maybe hurt best hay slashing arm if hits it. Mens Paul and Alex wear big cushion leg and glove and putting the fake pee pee in long pants then take bats (what a country that bats been made with no strikers for timber!) and seek to “keep heads down and play self in”. This from leads man Will. I thinking this a strange game and wishing instead for game of Kurtzen houster in barn.

Open mens good start and Paul score 28 runners but Alex friend leave field with 3 runners and cousin team looking not so good. Lead Will talk loud and runners much fast but he let downed by some mens in team. Man in jeans call self Jason smelling little like Papa's potato distil party drink in barn barrel. He look best cause has mens playing crickets on tshirt but this to fool team I think cause he leave field with 2 runners and leads man drop head. Rafu new boy bowl quick and I still shitty thinking I soon to batter for cousin team. Rafu speedy bowl and small tree three of them knock down and bowler man Dave coming back to side as well. Thens I have costume and walk to Leads man Will. He telling me much of Rafu new boy and say I must keep wicket. I tighten bot hole and copy friends in team I see from side. I have funs and hay arm stay safety. Then I feels dark belly cause lead man Will have small tree three of them knock down and leave field.

Speedy bowler man Stefan come to be with me but I feels not too good. He has the hit stick with pink holder rubber. In Bulgaria he feel fist and kick from mens cause they think he poop hole ringer for pink loving. I think maybe not his bat but friends bat cause he hit balls good and mens in new boys team runs but we don't and man behind small trees wave arm like brother Holga waved goodbye after shoulder injured in wheat machine. Much claps from Tyrone my cousin and friends. I think bests to keep speedy hard balls from hay arm and swings hit stick and balls is flying much far. I runners hard like lead Will man does but much often low waving man says to me ball gone and I to stop. Ball not gone cause it come back and new boys team dropping the head and saying the words used only in Bulgaria for mens to show love of wife, like shitty, and fucker. Then new friend Stefan hit balls to field and we runner and cheering from Tyrone and friends and we stop game and people touching shoulder and hand and bot but this time not mind cause have pee pee fake and they no touch there. Some mens say thank you for hitting balls far and tells me I score 49 runners not out but I confused cause had to leave fields. Lead mans Will say we winned 158 runners they only 154 or near.

Then cousin and friends take me to pub which again remind of Papa potato barrel smell and I not sure what happening when mens all to drinked cold pee pee with the bubble but I drinks some cause cousin tell me not so bad. I is drinking many and mens is telling stories from trip to country near home – Slovenia - where lead mans Will have bot slap from cousin and friend and they say he make sound like mens do with ladies in the warm area. I sees pink on his bag of padded hands and legs things and I think things much different in Lunden then Bulgaria. Much cousins friends slapping the back when leave but I protect hay arm and they say I good ringer and I is thinking this better than washing mud from pig bot back in homelend.

Is there a team the Fields can look to outscore? Quoth the Raven, 'Nevermore!'

London Fields 151/3 lost to Tower Ravens 158/2 by 7 runs

Paul ‘Everything in its right place’ Teasdale Reports:

Things didn’t get off to the smoothest of starts on Wednesday night for the first league game of the second league, in the second division of the mid week season as traffic and work commitments meant the club kit couldn’t be picked up by a nameless ‘Idioteque’ shirker giving captain Will ‘A Wolf at the Door’ Isaac the job of balancing about three bags, a set of stumps and 12 juggling monkeys on his bike and race from POPT to Vicky Park for a revised 6.45 start. In the interim, the Fielders already at the ground employed the unorthodox but oft employed warm-up routine of languidly smoking fags whilst watching the opposition, in this case Tower Ravens, bullseye the stumps from 30 yards.

Reduced to 14 overs a side, and with the toss forfeited due to reasons explained above, the Ravens had no hesitation in batting first in the warm evening sunshine with the spooky psych-folk of Bat for Lashes reverberating around the park, probably sending the synesthetic Troy ‘The Tourist’ Utz into a benneton coloured, acid-trail filled hallucination. Opening for the Fields came specialist into the wind bowler Tyrone ‘Knives Out’ Graham who bowled a mix bag of fast, straight, decent stuff and… some other stuff. He did however clean bowl one of the Ravens’ openers with a ravishing beauty and was a bit unlucky with a couple of ‘close’ shouts of leg before.

From the other end and utilizing both the wind and sun at his back Arthur ‘Treefingers’ Smart, bowled a disciplined length getting some tennis ball bounce that held the aggressive batsman Kev largely in check. With the Ravens’ batters less comfortable with the pace taken off the ball, Will replaced Ty with Dave ‘Nude’ Miller who bowled his flat darts, ironically, at a decent pace. Taz almost got an immediate breakthrough with a slashed drive just too high for Dave ‘True Love Waits’ Lane fielding at backward point.

Still, the Raven’s were ticking at about 10 an over thanks largely to good running and the dispatchment of the bad ball to the boundary. On came True Love Waits as a like for like replacement for Treefingers who was unlucky not to get a wicket in his spell. Though he bowled with good flight, the Raven’s began chancing their collective arm and started targeting the tennis courts just behind the midwicket boundary. Troy fielding in the deep, did well to get to a swerving howitzer that he probably saw, heard and smelt but sadly, dropped.

With Tower Ravens finishing on 156 from their allotted over’s with 2 of their batsmen reaching 50, the Fields were left needing roughly 11 an over from their 14. Openers Paul ‘Everything in its right place’ Teasdale and ‘True Love Waits’ needed to get off to a flyer and were going at a decent lick when in a moment of cricketing savagery that Paul Collingwood would have admired, Everything in its right place- who seems to have set himself the target of running out every member of the club this season-called True Love Waits through for an ambitious second leaving him well and truly ‘High and Dry’. Apart from this early aberration, the Fields chased pretty gamely going at about 9 on over off the first 10 with ‘One Shot’ Will employing his er, one shot to good effect. However, with run out specialist Teas retired on 50 and then Treefingers getting a textbook slow yorker early on, the remaining Field’s batsmen were left with quite a lot off not very many. The Fields never-say-die attitude meant lusty blows were struck but inevitably wickets tumbled with the pressure on; Taz’s 6 off the last ball leaving the Fields 7 short of the Raven’s score.

Cue much soul searching, head scratching and later, chin stroking with this being the 6^th midweek loss on the bounce, as some of the defeated players piled into Teas’ toy car, retreating to POTP to rehydrate and display an impressive interest in a range of conversational topics that they know almost nothing about from the merits of historical revisionism concerning the Anzac involvement in WW1 and its implications on the subsequent Ashes results, to how the hell electrons know whether they are a 1 or a 0.

FIELDS STRUGGLE ON

Still no match report or scores from Birdcage, so here's the result from the following game:

GRITTY FIELDS PUSH GOODMAYES TO THE DEATH

Everyone involved in this valiant display can hold their head up high after a six man London Fields fought tooth and nail to win pride if not overall victory in a match which probably should have been called off. The recent foul weather was to be seen in abundance and despite entreaties to halve the match Goodmayes insisted on play. Unless the match was to be forfeited before a ball was bowled the Fields had to play. And at 6;40 play started in the most disastrous fashion. Absent men who'd not managed to get to the game meant steady starts were needed but Robin Friend, who'd had a good run with the bat, was bowled third ball. Then in the same opening over Ben, keen to get a run on the board set of on a suicidal run and was sent back but could not make his ground.

If ever a captain's innings was needed it was now and Will Issac did not disappoint. The tidy bowling was fended of at one end by Robin Astley in reprise of his Slovenian Anchor role as Will set about anything loose and gained another mid week 50 retired, returning at the death to hit another twelve runs. Will made their fielders pay for dropping him with some clean hitting all over the park. In comparison the sluggish Robin was finally out plumb hitting across the line, which brought Stefan to the crease scoring 11. And with Ty (2) and the returning Will, the score was pushed up to 107 off 12 overs.

In one of the middle overs a bizarre set of loose deliveries saw to full tosses end up at square leg! Unfortunately for the Fields the bowler did not return after an expensive effort.

Confident of victory Goodmayes set about their task knowing that with effectively only four fielders to beat the work should not have been taxing. But oh how the Fields fought, harried and threw themselves at every shot. Will snaffled the sodden ball at mid off from Tyrone's first over and returning one for sixteen off three, Ty was the pick of the bowling. He also induced two edges and on another day could have had three wickets but with the rain slanting down the ball became a slippery bar of soap. Ben at the other end coaxed their dangerous number three to pull poorly and Robin Friend took the swirler. All the bowlers battled manfully to bowl to a Three/one field and Robin Friend was energetic behind the stumps but Goodmayes steadied their ship with a few boundaries. Will and Stefan then gave it all they had but It was impossible to defend the total even if ever fielder did the job of two men, and despite Robin Astley Taking a late wicket,
Goodmayes got to the finishing post with four balls to spare.
Who knows how the scorebook would have read had the team fielded eight men as committed to the cause as all the six that took part

FIELDS MAULED BY TIGERS

London Fields 152/3 lost to Bengal Tigers 154/3 by 4 wickets

Yes it was an evening of tension, sporting endeavor and lung busting effort, galvanizing a
rapped audience into a frenzied throng of ear splitting cheers and groans of despair mournful
enough to wake the dead.

But while John terry was about to take his fateful penalty pratfall, another bunch of sportsmen
groaned their own laments of dissolution at a match witnessed by a bloke on a bike, a couple of
dogs (Canine variety) and oddly a fire engine. Still, the Fields toiled and burst their lungs in a vain,
but valiant mirroring of Chelsea’s defeat, not once begrudging the lack of Russian soldiers dressing
up as man utd fans on the sidelines.

Things Had Look oh so bright at the start of play, with a confident side engaged in some show
offish catching practice as the Tigers arrived. The Burly and tousle-haired captain duly won the
toss and appointed John Avery and Robin Friend to lead the big game hunt. And how they set
about the wayward Tigers bowling! With great relish, boundaries and extras flowed like the beer
in a Moscow hostelry. With the score racing along and the batter’s flashing blades cutting a swathe,
the unthinkable happened when a shock on the money ball, was tickled to the keeper by Robin. His
sturdy effort cut short on 14. Nick Isaac strode out and in possibly his last ever mid week match
suddenly had to face markedly improved bowling. John forced the ball away beautifully and survived
a couple of lives to retire on 50. Chris joined Nick in a very sticky mid period as Tigers new boy
Darren almost cleaned him up. But Bravely Chris employed some Pietersonesque swats to the
boundary to get the scorecard ticking again. Nick was caught and Dave Lane added his valuable
18. Robin Astley replaced Chris who’d been bowled and knocked the odd ball to fine leg The
Fields finished with 152 on the card. The innings rounded off nicely with an off driven four.

While not being complacent, the Fields felt confident as the opposition had only scored 70 odd in
previous games, as it turned out the Tiger was wounded but in no way finished off. They roared out
of the blocks as our heroes shipped runs in every corner of the park. Will Issac suffered a torrid
time, while Tyrone Graham fared better at the other end whilst first change bowler Robin tossed
up a mixed bag and lost his rag after seemingly harsh wide calls and a plumb L.B.W refusal. Ty’s
spell was over and still no wicket had been taken, the tigers on course with 95 scored after ten
overs. Birdcage finally made the breakthrough as he trapped the suspiciously good opening bat
in front. Bowling a clever mixed pace over things started to look up, but it was to no avail as another
big hitter smacked the ball around Victoria park. Rallying his shell shocked troops Chris Skinner
took the ball and tried manfully to wrestle back the initiative but despite fine work from Nick, John
and

Robin Friend behind the stumps, two run outs were all Chris was rewarded with. In total three
catches went down in murky light and the Tigers needed five from Chris’s last over. He made them
work for it but they crossed the line with two balls to spare.

Truthfully, if the tigers had held on to their chances, they may well have been chasing a smaller
target. The evening was summed up eloquently by Robin Friend. ‘Aw man, losing SUCKS!’

MEEK MARTIANS FLATTER FIELDS

London Fields 172/5 (16 overs) Beat Norfolk Martians 64/4 (9.3 overs)

In glorious conditions, perfect for cricket, (for once), London Fields beat Norfolk Martians after they quit midway through their innings.

Winning the toss for the first time since the Elizabethan era, Fields batted first and accumulated steadily, aided generously by a series of extra’s, overthrows and misfields. Openers Robin Friend (38) and Paul Teasdale (29) reached a fifty partnership with ease, mixing big hitting and more orthodox shots as they went.

Dave Lane briefly looked in good touch, but a mini collapse was prevented from being too troublesome by Jason Lord who stroked a mature 18. Things were brought to spectacular finish by Will Isaac (31*) and Stefan Proud (13*) who found the boundary regularly as the innings reached its climax. Extra’s narrowly missed out on a top score, accruing 35 runs.

Fresh off the boat from Uspidedownsville, Tyrone (2.0.20.1) troubled the batsmen with his pace, whilst Stefan (3.0.22.0) teased them with his nagging line and length, Tyrone shattering one openers stumps. Will Isaac soon followed with another wicket before a spectacular run out from Paul Teasdale, with just one stump to aim at. Chris took a further wicket with his first ball, but play was halted due to the Martians declaration soon after.

Two wins out of two makes it a great start, and it was a joy playing in bright sunshine, but a disappointing finish given that almost everyone wanted to continue playing. Maybe if Norfolk Martians had brought their complete kit we could have done.

With a mixture of early season eagerness, tactical nous and sheer determination to play whatever the conditions, LFCC got their midweek campaign started in the best possible way. With A WIN!

The visible panty line league was aptly monikered as the heavens opened and players wondered if they were here for cricket, rugby or a wet t-shirt competition. (Without the fringe benefits of lithe female bodies.)

Our illustrious captain true to form lost the toss and was invited to field in the ever deteriorating, inclement conditions. Down to six players things looked tricky. With the batsmen hitting cleanly, opening bowler Stefan cleverly throttled back the pace and scoring was much more difficult. Late arrivals Taz and Robin bolstered the field and immediately Stefan struck. In total he took three wickets, one a crafty slow bowled Yorker,a la Harmison v Clarke circa 2005, removing danger man Freddie and setting up a hat trick ball with the next batsman caught plumb. With sterling support from Will at the other end, quickly the old Fallopian's batting had been removed, Midweek Virgins Dave Lane and Robin F (behind the stumps) combined with on line bowling and tidy glove work for a stumping and Taz ripped them in from the other end, bowling a fallopian with a slider. Modest as ever, Taz credited the pitch.

By now every member of the team was soaked to the bone but Chris marshaled his troops and the pressure was ratcheted up on the Fallopian’s. Taz and wickey Robin F got a smart run out and then Skipper Chris took a high swirling catch to finish things off.

Set 70 on the nose to win should present no problems even in fourteen over cricket but with every fibre of the batsmen drenched, the fields still had to apply themselves. Johnny come lately Robin A opened the chase with Will and was lucky to survive a good LBW shout first ball. With a mixture of runs and byes a twenty odd partnership was added until Robin (9) was bowled trying to sweep Fallopian’s South African spinner.

Soon Will followed for 7 but had been in good touch, unluckily hitting the cover fielder with crisp drives. VPCCL debutant Robin F then made a mockery of the condition with an outstanding 31 not out in partnership with Nick Isaac (3) and a bullish 15 from captain Chris.

With only two boundaries in the innings due to the Somme like outfield, sharp running for twos and threes were the signature of a fine win in ridiculous weather, this match was even wetter than the league triumph over Coach and Horses at Springfield park last year. The total was reached with two overs to spare for the loss of three wickets.

It’s worth noting that despite the atrocious weather both captains wanted to play and never was a grumble heard, only light-hearted banter from the superbly sporting Fallopian’s. Finally a great tradition of mid week cricket was upheld with the silly hat award going to Robin F’s flat cap and jumper combo. Well done everyone.

More exciting than Twenty 20, we only play 16 overs a side and already have a franchise in place. If the money's right, we'll travel anywhere, we'll even bring a crate of beer and dance the East London Haka.

Hey, we could even make it available live on terrestrial TV. Oh, and we're quite good at bus cricket too if that helps market the event.

Adding an exotic feel, we also play a team of Martians, some Tigers and, er, Goodmayes.

2008! WE'RE BACK!

Following our AGM, we are unanimously back in for the 2008 season of the VPCCL, which we expect will start late April. We'll probably find out more at the AGM, announced on the VPCCL site.

The club are now netting every Sunday morning to top up on the extended fitness regimes of the winter, which has seen members lifting weights, practising martial arts and telling fibs.

It was the LFCC AGM on Saturday, before that I took a trip to visit league president Burt, along with Typhoon...

As you can see, I am pretty happy, and I don't think Burt is unhappy. All in all, this is a nice moment.

I'm starting to remember why I hate autumn and winter. There really is nothing to do except hope Spurs recover/collapse (depending on your footballing persuasion), watch poorly scheduled games of cricket half way around the world, and actually get some work done.

I was asked to send some stats in to the league as they are compiling a review or something, so I thought I'd use these for an occasional feature over these dull months. Keep your eyes open and relive some of the glorious, glamorous and totally shoddy moments of the last summer...

DOMINANT FIELDS SAIL PAST PACIFIC TO TITLE

After a disappointing July where we were let down by opposition and weather, we were still in a position where a win against Pacific would guarantee the Division 2 title. With a closely mowed outfield and glorious evening sunshine we were sure we could overturn last years defeat against our opponents, even after we (once again) lost the toss.

Ty and John opened the bowling with massively contrasting styles; Ty mesmerising the Pacific openers with a mix of wayward pace and unplayable swinging deliveries, John offering good old fashioned line and length. Pacific had little in reply and were barely into their 30’s after 6 overs. After a brief change of ends, bringing a wicket maiden, Ty finished his 4 overs with an excellent 2 for 20.

Robin and Dave ‘Taz’ Miller took control from here, initially baffling the opposition (Robin picking up 2 key partnership breaking wickets), until Taz had a go at Alex Le Mays bowling achievements from a month back. Despite managing to go for 22 off his 3^rd over he could only manage falling 2 runs short of Le Mays generous record, going for 41 from 3 – there’s always next season!

Chris and John finished the bowling off, John continuing his niggling medium pace and Chris bowling terribly, picking up a flattering 1 for 11 from his 2 overs (thanks to some sharp keeping from Jason).

With the heady scent of victory inflaming our nostrils, a strong start was needed if we were going to chase down the target of 126. The early loss of Ruby did little to slow down Lordy who opened his innings with fours to all corners of the ground. Joining him, John also played some cracking aggressive strokes and when he fell for 15 we were already ahead of the required run rate.

Excellent tip and run play dominated the middle of the innings, as Rachmaninov lover Alex and Lordy milked the Pacific bowlers like buxom Manatee’s. The two departed in close succession however, Alex for 12 and Jason for what was to be a match winning 50 – not only did he have the pleasure of retiring, but we could call on him again should the run chase get sticky.

Not to be slowed down, Taz (23no) embarked on some massive leg side hitting against the Pacific spinners, and he and Chris saw Fields over the line with 2 overs to spare.

A comfortable victory in a match that we never looked like losing. We fielded superbly (John Avery taking a superb running catch), bowled aggressive lines and batted with supreme confidence. Apparently we even get a trophy!!

Amazingly, we actually had some opposition on Monday. They were there, so were we. The rain was also there however, pissing itself at the thought of us playing our 1st game for a month. Not a ball was bowled.

It'll probably snow next Tuesday when we play Pacific.

DOUBLE WICKET DANGERMEN!

With no opposition, but a sunny evening, 8 men and a free pitch, a net session turned into a double wicket contest...

Recent Cat in The Hat school graduate Dave paired up with Telfer and set an imposing net target of 33 from 6 overs (5 runs deducted for each wicket). Following them Chris and Ty seemed to be on the verge of eclipsing that until the big hitting Ty got bowled twice in succession by Paul T(ea), they finished on 39.

Ruby and Nick Isaac then really upped the tempo (or just sussed out there were few fielders and no umpire), losing just 1 wicket and scoring 62. Things then got a little ridiculous when we realised that both keepers were on the same team. Lordy and Teasdale then giggled their way to towards the last over with some woeful support from the fieldsmen. They needed 12 to win from the last 6, and 1 off the last ball which they achieved comfortably. Nick Isaac then revealed that it should be a tie as he had miscalculated on the scorebook (which was a Sainburys receipt from Chris's wallet). Cue a pointless debate where the honours were disputed...

I can now officially reveal that Ty and Chris won.

NO ONE IN LONDON WANTS TO PLAY CRICKET

Without a game since 26th June due to no-shows and cup matches, we were quite looking forward to playing on Tuesday. Sadly the opposition pulled out 24 hours ahead of the game as they only had 4 players.

Now, I’m sure they did go to some effort to get more men, and running a side can be hard work on top of jobs, drinking, telly etc. but surely there were people somewhere in town who would have played? League rules state that a team needs 5 players minimum so they were only 1 man away from a good run around in the park. Surely a slightly under strength team would be better than twiddling your thumbs at home, watching Eastenders?

There were even a few people at the nets who would have loved a game, and I'd have had no problem with them joining our opposition.

Still, 8 of us still turned up and played an excellent double wicket match, more on that to follow.

So we're now top of division 2 without having played a match, our fingers firmly crossed for Monday’s game! If the league AGM didn't already last so long I’d propose that any side that fails to fulfil a fixture should automatically finish bottom of the league.

SKINNER'S A WINNER AND ISAAC'S WHACK

After East End Cavaliers failed to put a team out against London Fields, the 8 Fieldsmen, plus 4 New Boys and 2 (very pleasant) randoms embarked on a 12 over, 7 aside smashathon.

Isaac won the toss and decided to bat and openers Sudu and Jason made steady (slow) progress until Ruby finally broke the partnership in the 7th over (thanks to a great catch from Saif). Tyrone upped the run rate with some clean hitting but another wicket for Ruby and one for Chris prevented any serious partnership building. The Isaac brothers nudged the batting sides to a competitive 82 and the Skinner 7 needed 7 an over to snatch victory.

The chase started poorly with Saif and Ruby both bagging golden ducks to the bowling of New Boy Kashem, before his fellow New Boys Mosin and Nizmul got the score moving. Nizmul, Alex and Chris fell in quick succession (two for Rips and one for a lucky Will Isaac) which left Paul T(ea) and the returning Mosin (who had retired on 25) needing to knock off a nervous 23 runs from 3.3 overs. Despite the immense pressure, they kept their heads and completed a marvelous victory with 5 balls to spare.

A good fun contest with a rare opportunity for Fieldsmen to sledge their colleagues made a potentially cack evening a far better experience than anticipated. Best of luck to New Boys for the rest of the season too.

East End Cavaliers failed to turn up for our match last night, a bit annoying that they never let us (and one of their own players) know this was going to happen but at least we get the points!

In the end we played a friendly match seeing a Will Isaac VII against a Chris Skinner VII with numbers made up by a few lads from New Boys and a few other random netters - a good fun match was won by the excellent Skinner side and a report will follow soon.

On another note, we tend not to pay too much attention to the oppositions results, but check this amazing result out:

WEATHER NOT TOO MUCH TO BARE*

After Sunday’s fixture Vs Baring was cancelled due to a slightly (very) damp pitch, a few Fieldsmen headed to Viccy Park for a net session. Baring CC had a similar idea and with the artificial pitches coping fine with the showers we decided to hold an impromptu 20/20 fixture.

With 2 Baring players already padded up, there was no toss and 8 of their players got going against 5 of us (RJ, Will, Ty, Faraz and Chris), plus their keeper, and the son of one of their players. Chris opened the bowling (with an old ball) and was soon rewarded with a wicket, another soon fell to RJ and Barings seemed to have, er, lost their bearings. A resolute partnership from Matt and Andrew steadied their innings, but we were boosted by the arrival of two new players in the form of debutant Matt Thompson and Ruby ‘Cat in the Hat’ Quince.

Tyrone finally broke the partnership and was unlucky not to claim a hat-trick, soon after Will also took 2 wickets in 2 balls and we looked to have wrapped it up. Barings however had managed to get on the phone to the rest of their team, who seemed to arrive just in time to keep the innings going and they finished their innings 8 wickets down with 112 on the board.

Richard (16) and Will opened our reply confidently but as Chris joined Will at the crease there were potentially disastrous off-field events taking place. A large group of kids and parents had arrived, with tables, chairs and even gazebos. Sadly they were not here to watch us and the park warden wandered over and ordered us off the pitch. Not to be beaten (we had after all relocated pitch already that day), we marched over to another free pitch and continued there. The move did for Chris who was bowled in the first over of the restart, but Faraz (25no) and Will guided us come with a mix of lucky drops and good hitting. Will clumped the winning runs for 4 and finished on 49 not out (if only he had gone for a 6!).

Considering this was meant to be another casualty to the rain, it turned out to be a great afternoon thanks to Baring's enthusiasm and the power of mobile communication. Who knows, one day it might stop raining and we might get a proper game in at London Fields!?

TEENAGERS TERRORISE TERRIBLE FIELDS. PART 2

There’s not a lot you can say about this. We lost to them a few weeks back in the league and lost by an almost identical score this time. Therefore, let’s do this in 2 lists:

THE SAME AS LAST TIME

They batted 1^st and won the toss.
They scored just over 120
In reply, we scored less than 90.
Only a slight wag from the tail prevented complete embarrassment.
They were an impressive and friendly opposition.

DIFFERENT TO LAST TIME

More than 2 of our batsmen got into double figures.
One of their players annoyed his own team almost as much as ours.
Er, different pitch.
That’s about it.

Well done to Ty for bowling like he was still at Glastonbury one moment, ripping stumps out the other, and Alex who hit an accomplished 24.

FIELDS PUT VALLANCE TO BED

Needing a win to attain 2^nd Division status against a team also needing success to qualify for the top league, an epic performance was required – three hours later we had delivered just that.

Losing the toss (again) and fielding first (again), Ty and Steve bowled perfect lines to the opposition’s openers. Ty rewarded with an early wicket after forcing the batsman into wild swings at the ball. Two more soon followed for Steve, with help from great catches by Alex and Will, and we were well set. After 8 overs Vallance had just over 50, were 3 wickets down and another bat had retired hurt. Our opponents have a fine record in this league though and fought back with a mix of clever singles and aggressive hitting. John, Chris, Ruby and Will all took a bit of a pasting and after the full sixteen overs, we were set a target of 156.

A quick start was essential, and Paul T(ea) and John got us going at 10 an over with some excellent exploiting of the gaps in the field. With boundaries hard to find, John ran five consecutive 2’s at one stage. Shattered, he was bowled by the Vallance spinner on 30. A similarly run happy Paul T(ea) followed soon after for a whippet-like 25 and we risked collapse. Needing 83 off the last 8 overs, Will and Alex consolidated before opening up. An injury to Alex left him needing a runner, but he was still able to find the gaps enough to get Will on strike. A huge 6 when on 48 gave Will his half-century and retirement and just 14 were needed from the last 2 overs…

The returning Vallance opening bowler finally took the wicket of Alex (17), and Chris and Ruby could only scratch 2 runs off the over. With 2 new batsmen and 12 needed from the last 6 balls things were tense. The fielding side’s tails were up and there were more than a few words…so the last over…

1^st ball – Chris hit for 4 and the game was back on…

2^nd ball – A wide. 7 needed from 5.

2^nd ball (again) – Chris managed to get bat on ball and a quickly sprinted 3.

3^rd ball – Ruby hit for 2 – 2 needed for victory.

4^th ball – Played and missed, momentum swung back a little.

5^th ball – Clump! Ruby hammered straight down the ground for 4.

A 4 wicket victory in fading light, our biggest ever successful run chase and a game where all 8 played a key role. Will’s 50 was a joy to watch, Ty and John kept their heads and umpired admirably in a pressure cooker situation, and a special mention to Turley who kept score when we ran out of players in the enveloping chaos.

CRIMINAL FIELDING SENDS FIELDS TO TOWER

A beautiful evening for cricket was hampered before play even began when police were called to remove a ranting lady carrying some slightly controversial opinions who was more than a little worse for wear, not that this is an excuse…

Batting first, Paul (22) and Will (27) put on a steady partnership, before Paul was carelessly stumped by an eagle eyed keeper, whose enthusiasm was typical of the excellent Tower Ravens fielding performance. Wickets tumbled as we tried to open up against their spinners, but efforts from Ruby (11) and John (who hit a fine 6 in his 21 not out) helped us to a competitive 117.

In reply, we knew we had a game on when one of the Tower Ravens openers hit Grant for one of the largest 6’s any of us have seen at the VP Astrodome. It went so far that two minutes later, having circumnavigated the globe, it landed somewhere beyond the nets. Our bowlers kept their cool though, with Pete taking a key wicket in four economic overs and John ripping through three further batsmen.

Ravens were stuck on 47/3 from the first 7 overs and we were well in control. At this point though, we lost our minds more than the drunk who joined us at the start of the match – our fielding became increasingly erratic with (often difficult) catches going down when they would normally be held – Dave being particularly unlucky diving for two tough chances. In addition, there were wild throws at the stumps causing overthrows in a range of unnecessary situations - Ravens needed just 15 from the last 18 balls. Bringing himself on, Chris only went for three off his 1^st over, put a poor 2^nd over allowed a four to be struck from the penultimate ball and seal victory for Tower Ravens by 2 wickets.

A terrible result, especially as weather appears to have aspired against us, leaving a team we bowled out for 49 a few weeks ago above us in the league and heading to division 2 because of a rained off tie. We need to beat Vallance next week to give us a hope of avoiding the third tier ‘super’ 6’s.

TEENAGERS TERRORISE TERRIBLE FIELDS

22nd May - VP Juniors beat London Fields by 46 runs...

Going in the match with some optimism (we narrowly lost this fixture last year) we thought we could give the league Champions a good, close match.

We bowled 1^st and despite aggressive intent (their opening bat clumped the very first delivery to the boundary) we did a good job pegging them back. Richard, Ty, Will and Jakob all bowled well with little luck – but did manage to break each partnership just as it looked like running away from us.

It was noted that Ty was wearing a silly hat and took no wickets, yet the other three bowlers weren’t wearing silly hats and took a wicket each. Therefore with some nervousness, the ball was thrown to Ruby. Ruby however proved to be a fine anomaly and he and Chris (left on a hatrick) engineered something of collapse, leaving the opposition on a steady 123.

We then batted. Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. It was horrible. Let’s do this in order of score. Alex, duck. Ty, duck. Chris, One. Richard, Two. Robin, Six. Will Six. Only a bit of tonk from Jakob (12 not out) and an excellent 28 from Ruby (including a massive 6 that landed on 3^rd selector Rob Harries’ bike) saved any face.

All out for 77, we simply couldn’t cope with the dynamic VP attack – including the fastest bowler we’ve faced this season…aged 14.

MORE CHATS, LESS ACTION

After bowling last weeks opposition for just 49, and with some nasty weather presenting itself, the skipper decided it would be a good idea to put the opposition in. This week however the bowlers struggled to get their lines right and the theoretically weaker opposition began piling the runs on. Ty, John and Telfer did the bulk of the bowling and despite some good balls, and a wicket each, every Chats batsman got at least a start

Towards the end of the innings, the boyfriend of the Chats Palace skippers daughter(!?) did a fine job of endearing himself with the in-laws, launching some crunching sixes, and only some nonsense in the last over allowing Chris and Jason to engineer a couple of run outs added to the wickets column.

So to the Fields turn to bat and our dynamic opening pair of Jason and Paul Teasdale (recent destroyer of the club batting record) lasted just 2 runs. Chris then joined Jason and despite their excellent communication in the field, the pair YES, NO and MAYBE’d their way through some shambolic running before Jason ran Chris out of his misery for 7. Facing certain defeat, Robin(30) and Jason then built a steady innings, and thanks to some generous bowling, put on a fine partnership of 74. The loss of Jason for 47, followed by Nick and John, trying to force the issue, plus some solid late bowling saw us fall 25 runs short.

TYPHOON DESTOYS CENTRAL LONDON

On a blustery early May evening where even Aleem Dar might have had trouble allowing play to continue, Fields were unsure if losing the toss was such a bad thing.

Opening the bowling, Ty and Pete were absolutely unplayable. Pete’s pace sent Central London into their shells before Ty ripped through the line up with an outstanding display of seam and swing. He had spent 20 unsuccessful minutes looking for stumps before the match, and as he hurled the ball at them with alarming consistency once play started, there was more than a hint of irony.

After finishing his spell with 5/23 (2 fine catches from Lordy included), Ruby and Robin (with his 1^st and only ball) soon wrapped things up with Central London amassing just 49. Surely an easy win was on the cards…

Dave(13) and Alex(6) started steadily and after the latter fell, Chris came out and hit a brisk 12 before playing on. With less than 10 needed Robin came and went quicker than you can say ‘random bag of porn DVD’s fell from the sky and landed in front of Ruby outside Pub on the Park’*. Fortunately, Jason and Ruby kept their heads and guided us home for a 3 wicket victory with half our innings remaining.

Over in less than 80 minutes, it was one of the more bizarre matches we have played in and a 100% record puts us in a good position for the four remaining group matches.

*That really happened, after the match, in POTP, quite amazing.

FALLOPIANS IN A TWIST

Enthusiasm for the new season was heightened when the Old Fallopians won the toss and put the Fields in, particularly generous given the early sunset and the fact that both teams only had five players at the time of the toss.

Lordy and Robin opened the batting and were comfortably able to work the ball around for an opening partnership of 42. Lordy’s departure for 11 saw newcomer Alex strut to the crease to score a progressively manic 25.

With the loss of Robin who scored an excellent 37, the team embarked on a spectacular display of unorthodox nonsense which saw Will (13) thump a huge six before he and Richard were bowled by deliveries from late Fallopian arrival Freddie.

By now, the enthusiastic Alex seemed to be running to and from each end with little regard for the ball bowled, shot played or location of any fielders. A spectacular last over saw Will and RJ both bowled, Chris run out without scoring from a wide, Ruby padding up on the pitch and finally Alex running himself out of the last ball. Our initially gentle run rate had upped a little and our score of 107 from 14 overs left the match evenly poised.

Our opening bowling attack of Ty and Ruby kept things tight and Will also joined in with unsettling aggression. The introduction of RJ to the attack turned things around spectacularly when, after getting clumped for 2 boundaries off his first 2 balls, he then took 2 consecutive wickets. From here, the Fallopians were always off the pace and fell 14 runs short.

Alex, RJ and Ruby all made notable contributions on their debut, our fielding was unexpectedly excellent and Old Fallopians provided competitive and friendly opposition in a game that could have gone either way. Surprisingly, we then headed to POTP.

Our first round of fixtures for the new season have been provisionally announced, and are as follows:

25^th April – Old Fallopians
We beat these last year which is a trend we are eminently capable of reversing.

8^th May – Central London
If their title is to be believed, and they can call upon the whole of central London, then we have no chance. Unless central London is in fact technically located somewhere in the Thames and their side consists of a few ferry captains, some poo and a Sainsbury’s trolley.

16^th May – Chats Palace
According to Wikipedia, ‘Chats’ was an affectionate term for headlice, although I think they take their name from a local community arts project.

22^nd May – Victoria Park Juniors
These beat us last year, largely due to one kid who looked remarkably like a large, stubble-ridden adult. It turns out he was.

4^th June – Tower Ravens
These also beat us last year, in the game that Nick Isaac mounted a Pit Bull Terrier.

12^th June – Vallance
We actually beat these in the league last year, before getting violated by them in the cup.

There are four more 2^nd phase league fixtures, plus potentially 5 cup games, all to be announced later.

AGM SURVIVED

The VPCCL 2007 AGM took place last week, it took nearly 4 hours and almost nothing changed, but it was a learning experience. For example; we now know that Will can repair a mail server after 8 pints of Guinness.

None-the-less, we are delighted to be part of it all and fixtures for the summer will be announced soon. Yay!

LAST SUMMER...

We had our 1st season of action in the Victoria Park Community Cricket League. The title of this league is, as you will have noticed, extremely long, so lets hope they never get a sponsor. Unless it's Delirium Tremens.
